SoftPOS in Singapore: Tap to Pay with Rewardly POS and Kiosk

SoftPOS turns a compatible Android device into a contactless payment acceptance point. Rewardly brings that payment step into the POS and supported self-ordering kiosk flow, keeping the order and its payment together.

What is SoftPOS?

SoftPOS (software point of sale) lets an eligible NFC-enabled Android phone or tablet accept a customer’s contactless card or mobile wallet tap without a separate card reader. The merchant still needs an approved payment service, onboarding and a compatible device. In Singapore, “tap to pay on Android” describes the acceptance method; a complete POS also manages the sale around it.

That distinction matters. A standalone SoftPOS app may collect an amount but leave the cashier to enter the order in another system. Rewardly POS places tap-to-pay within its selling workflow, so staff can build the basket and take payment on a supported Android device. Rewardly also offers self-ordering kiosks with built-in tap-to-pay on supported NFC hardware. PayNow QR is a separate payment method that Rewardly can present at checkout; scanning a QR code is not an NFC SoftPOS tap.

How does a SoftPOS sale work?

The customer journey is short, but a useful merchant workflow continues after payment approval.

  1. 01Build the orderThe cashier selects items in Rewardly POS, or the customer orders at a supported kiosk.
  2. 02Show the amountThe same checkout presents the total and available payment options.
  3. 03Tap to payThe customer holds a supported contactless card or wallet at the device’s NFC area.
  4. 04Continue the saleAfter approval, the payment result remains linked to the order for the configured receipt, fulfilment and reporting flow.

This is why integrated SoftPOS is more useful than simply replacing a terminal. It reduces the chance of an amount being typed twice and makes it easier to trace a paid order through the rest of the operation. Network availability and the payment provider’s approval process still apply.

Rewardly POS: sell from an Android phone

For a mobile seller, the Android phone becomes both the sales screen and the contactless acceptance point. A cashier can take an order at a queue, counter, pop-up or event, then invite the customer to tap the phone. Rewardly’s public Tap-to-Pay guide specifies a Google Mobile Services certified Android 10+ device with NFC for its SoftPOS setup. Supported schemes and payment options should be confirmed for the merchant’s account.

In a full Rewardly deployment, the POS can connect the sale with order management and relevant inventory or loyalty processes. The exact behaviour depends on the merchant’s configuration. The value is a single checkout path to demonstrate and train, rather than a payment app beside an unrelated POS.

Rewardly Kiosk: self-order and tap at the same station

At a supported self-ordering kiosk, the shopper chooses items on screen and pays at the kiosk’s NFC acceptance area. The paid order can then move into the merchant’s configured fulfilment workflow. This can shorten the handoff between ordering and payment while letting staff focus on preparation and service.

For a restaurant, café or event organiser, the question is not merely whether the kiosk accepts a card. Ask whether the paid order reaches the right preparation station, whether staff can see its status and whether the sales record remains consistent with the POS. Explore Rewardly’s POS and self-service options.

SoftPOS vs card terminal, payment app and PayNow QR

Each option has a place. Choose by workflow, device readiness and the customer’s preferred way to pay—not by hardware count alone.

Rewardly can offer card tap and PayNow QR as checkout choices, but their acceptance rules, fees and settlement arrangements can differ. Ask for the actual merchant proposal rather than assuming one rate applies to all methods.

Where does SoftPOS fit best?

Queues and busy events. A supported Android phone gives staff another selling point when a fixed counter is crowded. See how a wider event POS workflow connects checkout to fulfilment and collection.

Small-format retail and service. Staff can take a payment where the customer is, without sending every transaction to one counter. Item selection and stock visibility still need a capable POS.

F&B and self-service. A compatible kiosk lets guests order and tap at one station. The merchant should test queue flow, kitchen routing, receipts and exceptions during a realistic peak-hour demo.

For a permanently busy checkout, a dedicated terminal may remain the better ergonomic choice. SoftPOS is particularly valuable when mobility or fast expansion matters.

What do Singapore merchants need, and what does it cost?

For Rewardly’s Android tap-to-pay, start with a GMS-certified Android 10+ phone or tablet with NFC, a supported Rewardly setup, merchant onboarding and reliable connectivity. Kiosks need a compatible Android/NFC configuration. Device models, supported cards and wallet types should be checked before a go-live date. Keep a charging and network plan for long event days.

Compare the total cost of acceptance: application or POS subscription, merchant discount rate (MDR), any setup or settlement fees, device purchase, support and the staff time spent reconciling orders. SoftPOS can remove the need for a separate card reader at a given sales point, but it does not make processing free. Ask how refunds, voids and failed or pending payments appear in reporting.

Is SoftPOS secure? What are its limits?

Mobile contactless acceptance is covered by payment-industry requirements such as the PCI Security Standards Council’s MPoC standard. That standard is a useful reference when asking a provider about its approved solution and acquirer. It is not, by itself, evidence that a particular Rewardly deployment has a stated certification. Confirm the actual compliance and card-scheme scope with your provider.

Operationally, protect the phone as a payment device: restrict staff access, keep the operating system current, use approved devices and know what happens if the battery or connection fails. NFC availability, card scheme support, transaction limits and on-screen PIN handling can vary by provider and configuration. Test these details with the same device and location you will use in production.

SoftPOS Singapore: common questions

Can an Android phone accept card payments without a card reader?

Yes, if the phone meets the payment provider’s NFC, operating-system and security requirements, and the merchant has completed onboarding. Rewardly’s published setup calls for GMS-certified Android 10+ with NFC.

Is SoftPOS the same as a POS system?

No. SoftPOS is the method for accepting a contactless payment on a device. A POS system manages items, pricing, orders, receipts and often inventory or customer records. Rewardly combines those steps in one selling workflow.

Does Rewardly SoftPOS also accept PayNow?

Rewardly can offer PayNow QR at checkout as a separate payment option. PayNow uses QR approval through a banking app; SoftPOS refers to NFC card and wallet taps.

Can any self-ordering kiosk use SoftPOS?

No. A kiosk needs an eligible Android device, NFC hardware, an approved payment configuration and a suitable customer-facing tap area. Confirm the specific model in a live demo.

Does Rewardly’s tap-to-pay work on an iPhone?

Rewardly’s published SoftPOS requirements in this guide are for supported Android devices. Ask Rewardly about current platform and device availability before planning an iPhone deployment.
